It would be difficult to estimate the number of games that have been won or lost because one o£ the teams playing was in better condition than the other. It is difficult to find an excuse that will justify losing a game for this reason. The opponent may have superior talent available but both teams possess the same opportunities for “getting into shape.” One of the crucial coaching basketball fundamentals is ensuring that the team is fit mentally and physically.

Few players will reach peak physical condition unless expertly guided by the coach. Thus, plans for an upcoming basketball season must include proper drills and procedures for assuring maximum squad conditioning.

Mental Condition

Much of the success of a basketball team certainly depends on the overall mental condition of the team. An overwhelming desire to win, a sense of pride in conditioning, and a burning love for the game can inspire players to efforts far greater than their bodies would be able to produce otherwise.

Though physical condition must go jointly with mental condition, the importance of the proper frame of mind to overall team conditioning cannot be minimized. The body can do more physically when the player believes it can and desires for it to do more. The four-minute mile barrier is a superb example of what can be done when athletes recognize mentally that the body is capable of greater things.

Players must be convinced of the need for giving that extra effort and must develop the desire to give this extra effort willingly.

Mental conditioning requires more than confidence and desire to excel. It requires an attitude from each player that will contribute to the success of the team. Team play is never enhanced by petty jealousies and bickering among players. Nor does team or individual play improve when attitudes toward the coach and his criticisms are faulty. The team with high morale, genuine friendship among players and the coach, and a confidence in their ability to succeed is destined for championship play.

Physical Conditioning

One of the coaching basketball fundamentals is to ensure your team knows how to keep physically fit. The body must be conditioned for exerting maximum effort throughout the long basketball season. Prime physical condition not only enables players to give their best efforts all of the time but improves their ability to perform individual and team fundamentals and reduces injuries.

Pre-practice Conditioning. A program of conditioning prior to the opening of practice sessions can be very beneficial. Activities conducted outside the gymnasium can ready the body gradually for the rigorous work in the gymnasium. The feet can gradually be toughened on a surface less hard than the gymnasium floor thereby reducing the occurrence of blisters. The outdoor surface can aid in conditioning the legs for work on the hardwood and reduce shin splints.

Activities that may be used in a pre-practice conditioning program are:

1. Calisthenics.

2. Cross-country running.

3. Speedball.

4. Volleyball.

5. Two-man Volleyball (Two players on each side. Regular volley ball rules apply.)

6. Weight training.

Preseason Conditioning. Most teams practice six weeks before their opening game. During this practice period, drills must be used to allow players to attain a top condition level prior to the opening game. Full-court running drills, pressing defensive drills, and drills incorporating quick starts and stops are excellent conditioners.

It usually is better to start out relatively light during the first few practice sessions and progress toward harder practice sessions as the legs and feet become conditioned to the hardwood. Many coaches like to think of themselves as tough conditioners and try to “pour it on” their players during the first few days of practice.

If the coach is making the unfortunate mistake of inflating his ego through acquisition of the “tough” label, he well may do his players more harm than good. It is far better to postpone the harder practice sessions until players are physically ready to participate in them.

Varied Basketball Dribbling Drills For Improving Your Game

Dribbling may seem like a pretty basic skill, but it is absolutely essential to know and gain expertise at if you are going to be a good player. Basketball dribbling drills are the best way for athletes to master this skill. You have to be able to advance the court with the ball without the other team intercepting. In order to become advanced, you must first start off with the basics. Coaches use several different drill techniques for various drill maneuvers, like basketball shooting drills. Players must learn how to dribble in place, through on coming defense, moving forwards and backwards, and in several other play scenarios. There is also the zig-zag drill that coaches use to build agility and ball handling. Teams dribble along the right side of the court at an angle. Once they get to the free throw, they must quickly switch up with a cross over using the other hand. This move is repeated back and forth over several minutes. Coaches also use this drill to build up defensive skills.

More intricate exercises include the two ball drill routines that coaches use to improve ball handling and coordination skills. Players begin by dribbling two balls at the same time. They must run from the baseline to the free throw line while both basketballs hit the ground at the same time. When they get to the line, they have to alternate the dribble. Each ball must now hit the ground at separate times.

There are also odd shaped reaction balls that have a unique six-sided design that makes them bounce in different directions. These balls are used to build a player’s reaction time regarding ball handling. They are used to help player move quicker with the ball. Coaches use them to improve hand, eye and feet co-ordination. There are several other exercises used with reaction balls to improve players performance on the court.

These are just a few of the basketball dribbling drills. There are many more that coaches use to build their team’s skills before moving on to basketball shooting drills. Athletes must also take the time to practice on their own. The dribble is a very basic function of basketball, but must be practiced and perfected in order to become an effective player on the court.

Weightlifting and Basketball – The Pros

How important is weightlifting in the game of basketball? 10 or 15 years ago I would have said that it is only important for injury prevention. The game has changed. There is now a standard that every basketball player must adhere to if they want to be great. Of course there are some exceptions, but do not tell me that if those players such as Tayshawn Prince and Kevin Durant put on 20 pounds of muscle they wouldn’t benefit greatly. Trust me, those players are working hard every day to get bigger and stronger. Plus, those two athletes have some uncommon, freakish skill sets and body structures that most players are not blessed with.

Players who have never stepped foot in a weight room are going to have some problems on defense. Defenders can get by being skinny as long as the people they are guarding are shorter then they are. They can use their length to deflect and alter shots, but if they are shorter they have some big issues. This is especially true today, where the “pro hop” (a move where you use a long jump stop to muscle a defender for position) has become so popular. If you are too light all the offense has to do is get an inch past you (or not even past you if you can’t beat him to the spot for a charge) and then pro hop into your body, which knocks you back so you can’t contest the jump shot, and then rise up. Not to mention that you are vulnerable to being posted up. Most coaches are too old school to post up their guards, but to me this is easier because you can have a big man set a big on little rip screen and get the guard a layup every time, or a mismatch for the big if they switch.

On the offensive side of the ball, weight lifting can really benefit your game if you are slow and not able to get to the basket. Like I previously stated, if you are bigger and stronger than your defender a simple pro hop will get you layups every time. Most teams today force baseline. If there is no help, or the help is late, there is no reason you can’t get a layup. Simply drive deep into the baseline and use your butt to pro hop back into the defender and move him so that you have a “gimme” layup. Watch players like Carmelo Anthony who don’t use any moves usually. They just drive baseline and body the defense to get what they want.

It is not so much as what kind of benefits you will receive by lifting weights. There is no option these days. If you want to be a better player you must add this to your regime. It is all about the standard that has been set today by all basketball players. If you have not yet reached this standard you will always be a liability in this game and will never be able to reach your full potential.

France Got Game

September 25, 2000: The French national basketball team was in its final game in the Group “A” preliminary round of 2000 Sydney Olympics Basketball Tournament. France was sporting a 2-2 record, besting both China and New Zealand but losing to both Lithuania and Italy. And as luck would have it, though in a bad way, they were going up against the mighty Team USA, led by the likes of NBA superstars Jason Kidd, Kevin Garnett, Gary Payton and Ray Allen, who were carrying a perfect 4-0 record after obliterating their opponents. It was really a foregone conclusion that France would be their fifth victim in their quest for another basketball gold medal.

But it would only get worse. With just 16 minutes to go in the second half of what would be a 106-94 thumping of France, Team USA’s Vince Carter, who just won the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest seven months ago, stole a pass from almost the midcourt line. Going for a sure rim-rattling dunk, he was confronted by Frédéric Weis, a gangly, 7′2″ Frenchman trying to hopelessly draw an offensive foul just a few feet from the basket. Carter dribbled once and leapt. He amazingly leapfrogged over Weis, scraping the Frenchman’s head for balance, and viciously slammed the ball for two points. The whole Sydney SuperDome shook in awe. And though they eventually got the silver medal in the tournament, France was unabashedly posterized for the whole world to see.

But notwithstanding this unpleasant moment for the French flag, things stared to look up for basketball in France. It began with the 2001 NBA drafting of sensational point guard Tony Parker by the San Antonio Spurs, who then won a string of championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Parker was also adjudged the Finals MVP in 2007, wiping off the sour taste of that Weis debacle and paving the way for the NBA to fully recognize the wealth of talent coming in from France.

Boris Diaw of the Charlotte Bobcats, whose versatility was showcased while playing for the Phoenix Suns from 2005-2008; Ronny Turiaf of the Golden State Warriors, who took part in the 2008 NBA Finals playing for the Los Angeles Lakers; Mickaël Piétrus of the Orlando Magic, who helped the Magic reach the 2009 Finals; and Joachim Noah of the Chicago Bulls, who was instrumental in the Bulls’ tough stand against the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2009 Playoffs, are some of the notable players that elevated the French flag in terms of playing in the NBA. Not to be forgotten, though, Tariq Abdul-Wahad, born Olivier Michael Saint-Jean, was the first French-born player to ever play in the NBA, suiting up for the Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic, Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks from 1997-2005.

So, in surmising these players, it can be truly said that not only with their sheer talent but also with the passion they bring to the game, they are worthy enough of playing basketball at the highest possible level. And even with that “le dunk de la mort” almost a decade ago, France clearly got some serious game.

5 Things Not to Do When Playing Basketball

You are probably told most often what to do when playing basketball. However, highlighting some things you should not do is also important to mastering the sport. Being able to see what is wrong is a good thing because it allows you to be aware of the things that can get your team fouls or other violations on the court.

Every good player knows the rules, and they know what they can and can not do on the court. These five top things not to do on the court are something every player has to take to heart. One slip up may not be a big deal, but a player who really doesn’t know what they are doing wrong can end up making the team lose the game.

Make sure you and all your teammates understand that doing the following things can ruin the game for everyone.

1. Traveling

Traveling is a direct violation of the rules. Traveling is when you are carrying the ball or performing an illegal dribbling action. Players must recognize the rules regarding traveling and avoid doing it. Many players travel when they are attacking the basketball hoop.

Traveling is a simple way to get your team a violation. Fortunately it is a simple thing to avoid if you are constantly aware of the ball and how you are handling it.

2. Losing eye contact

Eye contact is important in almost every team sport. You can not play as a team if you are not connected with your teammates. Eye contact allows you to know where other players are and what they are doing. You can often tell what a player is going to do through eye contact or send messages through eye contact that are subtle and not picked up by the opposing team.

Good eye contact should always be stressed by coaches because when eye contact is bad it leads to the ball being lost and players feeling disconnected from the team.

3. Knowing where the ball is at all times

Every player on the court, no matter where they are playing or if they are playing defense or offense, should always know where they ball is. Losing sight of the ball is a fatal mistake. Plays are missed, points are lost and games take wrong turns when players start to take the ball for granted.

You have to know where the ball is at all times. You have to always be watching where it is going because your goal is to either get the ball in the basket or stop the ball from getting to the basket. If you do not know where it is then you can not do either.

4. Leaving your position

There is always a reason that the coach places each player in certain positions. It is up to the players to follow the coach’s orders and play their position. Unless told otherwise or unless it is a great benefit to the team, a player should always be focused on their position.

When players start to leave their position it weakens the team and allows for mistakes and possible scoring by the other team.

5. Intentional fouls

Lastly, you want to avoid fouls at all costs. Some may be unavoidable and a simple accident. Other fouls, though, are intentional and most often due to a lack of self control. When playing a team sport things can get heated, but players must show self control. Letting your emotions get the best of you is no way to win a game.
